0 <abstract>The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National A
0ssessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. Th
0e Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petro
0leum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interp
0reted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and in
0corporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing
0similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleu
0m System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism,
0and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as
0the limits of the geologic elements that define the Assessment Unit, such as li
0mits of reservoir rock, geologic structures, source rock, and seal lithologies.
0 The only exceptions to this are Assessment Units that border the Federal-Stat
0e water boundary. In these cases, the Federal-State water boundary forms part
1of the Assessment Unit boundary.</abstract>
0 <purpose>The purpose of these files is to define and illustrate the geograph
0ic limit and geologic boundaries of the Assessment Units within the defined Tot
0al Petroleum Systems, as required for the USGS National Assessment of Oil and G
0as Project. The Assessment Units were used as the fundamental units for the as
0sessment of undiscovered oil and gas. The assessment unit boundaries define th
0e combined geologic limits of each Assessment Unit and are described and define
1d in the text portions of this assessment publication.</purpose>
